Lennon Tool Bar - Special Edition - 惡化市 E Hua Shi(E Hua City) - City of Radical Thought is one of three special edition inks created for their design exhibition this year.

During the period of Japanese rule in Taiwan, Changhua emerged as a cradle of emerging ideas and civic consciousness. Local scholars and community groups began advocating for equality, education, and self-awareness. To the colonial authorities, however, such movements complicated governance. They labeled these progressive efforts as “corrupting ideas” (惡化思想) and branded Changhua a “city of ideological deterioration” (思想惡化之地).

But the people of Changhua reclaimed the label with pride. What was meant as an insult became a symbol of resistance and enlightenment. They began calling themselves citizens of E Hua Shi (惡化市民)—the City of Radical Thought—a name that continues to represent the courage to question, to think, and to spark change.

 

About Lennon Tool Bar:
Lennon Tool Bar was founded in 2014 at Tamsui, Taiwan. Initially, it started to promote arts and crafts of Indigo Dyeing, a business that flourished a century ago in Taiwan, and at the time, Taiwan exported a considerable amount of "doroai," or the raw material of colorants used in Indigo Dyeing, to the Japanese Empire. Lennon Tool Bar draws inspiration from the traditional process and the popular colors used in Indigo Dyeing.
