The Platinum Izumo Iro Urushi Fountain Pen - Aitetsu Iro is part of a series of unique Izumo pens that is designed with minimal embellishments in order to highlight the luster and colors of the pigmented iro urushi lacquer. The metal parts such as the nib and clip all have a colorless rhodium finish which allows the unique color of the pen body to shine through. Skilled craftmans then create a unique smooth texture on the barrel and cap by polishing the lacquer until no brush marks remain. The Izumo Iro Urushi combines traditional techniques with a sleek, modern feel.
Aitetsu Iro is based on the subdued colors of the Edo Period, which were considered stylish at the time. The color—which translates to "Indigo Iron"—is produced by applying a dark red iron color over dark blue indigo. It was particularly desired for its subtle beauty.

About the Izumo Series:
Shunichi Nakata, the founder of Platinum Pen, launched the Izumo series in 2010 with the help of local craftsmen and the cooperation of officials from Izumo City in Shimane Prefecture. The name was chosen to acknowledge the birthplace of the founder, also known as Izumo-no-kuni and renowned for its production of high quality washi paper for fountain pens. Each Izumo pen is made from ebonite and coated in layers and layers of hand-applied urushi lacquer, representing the pinnacle of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
