Pilot Namiki Emperor Fountain Pen - Owl
Created by master maki-e artisan Yutaka, this design showcases the refined Togidashi-Taka Maki-e technique. In Japanese culture, the owl (fukuro) symbolizes good fortune and protection, a theme elegantly expressed throughout the artwork. Crafted on an ebonite base, two owls are rendered using the rare Rankaku technique, in which quail eggshell fragments are inlaid and burnished to create remarkable depth and texture. Meanwhile, the Raden technique adds finely cut abalone shell to the owls’ eyes for a subtle, luminous sparkle. One owl perches quietly on the cap atop a Quercus serrata tree, while the other is depicted mid-flight on the barrel, capturing the bird’s silent precision. Multiple layers of clear urushi lacquer protect the surface and give the pen its deep, lustrous finish, highlighting the exceptional craftsmanship and detail.
The Emperor Collection is Namiki’s highest-ranking series, representing the pinnacle of artistry, tradition, and luxury. Each pen is made from ebonite and fitted with a massive No. 50 (Jumbo) 18K gold nib, reminiscent of Namiki’s historic maki-e pens from a century ago. The collection includes two types of pens: one without a clip, allowing the design to flow uninterrupted around the entire barrel, and one with a clip for added functionality. It fills via eyedropper and includes an ink-stopping mechanism for precise ink flow.
