The tip of this pen might look a little strange. The felt tip of pen is centered and sandwiched by two sections. The longer section gives a little more resistance when a downward pressure is applied. The reason it looks like this is because in 1978, this pen was designed to be a cheaper replacement for fountain pens. The tip of this pen resembles a fountain pen, and it was named PulaMan. (Pula is short for plastic, and this pen is also nicknamed plastic fountain pen). It was during the time when ballpoint pens were on the rise and fountain pens were declining. To get more students to use fountain pen, companies like Sailor came out with a popular beginner fountain pen “Candy” during 70’s, and PulaMan was Pentel’s response. The pen writes smoothly and provides a wide range of line widths, similar to a fountain pen.
On 40th anniversary of original release, Pentel added 6 new colors on top of black, blue and red. The new colors were limited at the time, but in 2020 March, Pentel decided to make the 6 new colors as regular.
Love the unique nib designs of Pulamans, so I had to get one in sepia! Excellent for doodling from observation.
I love felt tip pens for journalling and bought these to use alongside the Kokuyo PASTA soft markers. They write so smoothly and don't smudge or bleed. I think it's a unique pen in that it slowly conforms to your writing angle over time, so I have no doubt that it'll remain very comfortable even after hours of writing. I only bought the black, but I have my eyes on the other colors in the future!
These pens are AMAZING! I bought a few different colors a couple weeks ago and I've noticed they're pretty much the only pens I've been writing with since (I have three cups of pens on my desk so if I'm reaching for them that often, that's really saying something). They write so smoothly and the ink is dark and crisp without bleeding or ghosting through the paper. Honestly my favorite part is that you can easily adjust how thick your lines are depending on the angle/side of the pen you use to write. I am coming back to buy the colors I didn't get the first time, and I hope these consistently stay in stock, because I will definitely want to be replacing them when they run out (and they might soon with how much I'm using them). I hope this remains a regular item so I can keep purchasing/using it!!
I've never used a fountain pen until last week when I bought a beginner's pen to try. I was having trouble with it and thought that I would try this model to start with before "graduation" to a more traditional model. I used it today to write two letters and I absolutely LOVED IT! The letters came out crisp and clear and it didn't smudge at all! I look forward to using it more during my day-to-day writing activity and working with my pressure and angles for different lines.
