Classiky x OHM Factory Wooden Toy
These Wooden Toys are charming trinkets meant to add a bit or fantastical charm to your desk or office space. Each toy has been handmade by an artisan from wood (and glass) to create stunning miniature works of art. Inspired by The Pillow Book, the toys feature different animals, insects, and seasons from the story. The Pillow Book is an essay written by Sei Shonagon during the Heian period. Its many chapters explore the beauty of nature, the joys, happiness, and fears of everyday life, and even though it was written a thousand years ago, readers today can still empathize with its feelings, especially through these small wooden toys.
Find the excerpt explaining each wooden item below:
- Spring - Inspired by a line from the book: "Spring is dawn (when the night begins to lighten)." It depicts fresh green of the mountains, a nightingale (ho-hoke-kyo), and cherry blossoms.
- Summer - Inspired by a line from the book: "Summer is night". It describes a scene filled with fireflies, the "mosquito-repellent pig", morning glories and wind chimes.
- Autumn - Inspired by a line from the book: "Autumn is dusk," It depicts Autumn as a time to gaze upon the golden shining rice ears and scarecrows, feel homesick, and savor the beautiful full moon at night.
- Winter - Inspired by a line from the book: "In winter, early mornings," it says, describing the scene of someone rushing to light a fire on a cold, snowy morning.
- Insect (Bagworm) - It is said that the bagworm was born from an ogre. Believing that it would grow up to be as fearsome as its mother, the father dressed it in tattered clothes and told it to wait for him, saying, "I'll come again in the fall." The bagworm, unaware of this, cries out, "Father, father..." when autumn arrives. It is truly pitiful.
- Scary Object (Mononobe) - In the "Those with Terrifying Names" section of The Pillow Book, there are descriptions of things with names that include "oni" (demon), as well as yokai such as "ikiryo" (living spirits) and "ushi-oni" (cow demons). Unknown things have always been frightening, both now and in the past, and they also arouse curiosity.
- Sea Otter - Actually looks like a hunting tiger (rakko) when written in kanji.
- Sloth - Actually a combination of the kanji for "tree and lazy".
- Tadpole - These small creatures also have kanji that makes them seem grand.
- Parent and Child Sparrows - A section of the book describes how cute it is when a parent sparrow feeds its baby sparrows insects.
- Mother and Child Chickens - It's cute when baby chickens chirp noisily and follow people around, and when a mother chicken walks with her chicks
- Mother and Child Mallard Duck - The author writes, "It's so cute to see them walking around with their chicks."
- Paradise (Buddha) - Paradise is one of the stories in The Pillow Book. The Buddha standing on a lotus flower will surely be watching over with kindness.
- The Moon - This section describes things like paradise and the love between two people.
- Mountain Pheasant and Mirror - It says, "The mountain pheasant cries out of longing for its friend, so when shown a mirror, it sees its reflection as a friend and finds comfort in its heart. It is truly pitiful." Please cherish this mountain pheasant and its mirror so that it never becomes lonely.
- Lutus and Murasame - A scene of lotus leaves in a pond being hit by a heavy rain. On a hot day, the rain returns the leaves to their vibrant green. "I'm sure frogs will come out too, enjoying the pleasant company."
