The Platinum Izumo Urushi Maki-e Fountain Pen - Urokomon belongs to Platinum's highest tier of luxury pens and uses only organic material—ebonite, urushi lacquer (tree sap), abalone shells, powdered gold, and powdered charcoal—to form a traditional Japanese pattern, called kiccho, that symbolizes protection and serves as a good omen. The barrel of this pen features Hira maki-e, a method of Japanese lacquerwork from the Heian period (794-1185) that uses a variety of gold and silver powders to create metallic color in flat relief. Each urushi layer is polished with powdered charcoal to create multiple tones of gold. This bold carp-scale pattern is completed with raden designs of inlaid abalone shells that catch light in a different way. This beautiful pen is not only a writing instrument but a masterpiece of traditional Japanese art.

About the Izumo Series:
Shunichi Nakata, the founder of Platinum Pen, launched the Izumo series in 2010 with the help of local craftsmen and the cooperation of officials from Izumo City in Shimane Prefecture. The name was chosen to acknowledge the birthplace of the founder, also known as Izumo-no-kuni and renowned for its production of high quality washi paper for fountain pens. Each Izumo pen is made from ebonite and coated in layers and layers of hand-applied urushi lacquer, representing the pinnacle of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
