The Platinum Izumo Urushi Maki-e Fountain Pen - Aurora belongs to Platinum's highest tier of luxury pens and uses only organic material—ebonite, urushi lacquer (tree sap), sea shells, and gold—to express an amazing natural phenomenon. The barrel of this pen features Aizu maki-e, a traditional Japanese craft that dates back to the 16th century. This traditional art is recognizable for its usage of bold, decorative designs, as well as an expert polishing technique that results in a naturally lustrous shine. Laid into the barrel of this pen are lively raden designs of colorful sea shells, expressing a gorgeous aurora. Gold powder in the layers and layers of urushi represent stars twinkling in the night sky, complementing the aurora's rainbow. This beautiful pen is not only a writing instrument but a masterpiece of traditional Japanese art.

About the Izumo Series:
Shunichi Nakata, the founder of Platinum Pen, launched the Izumo series in 2010 with the help of local craftsmen and the cooperation of officials from Izumo City in Shimane Prefecture. The name was chosen to acknowledge the birthplace of the founder, also known as Izumo-no-kuni and renowned for its production of high quality washi paper for fountain pens. Each Izumo pen is made from ebonite and coated in layers and layers of hand-applied urushi lacquer, representing the pinnacle of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
