Urushi lacquer is made from the sap of the Urushi Tree which takes 15 years to mature and can only be found in Eastern Asia. Due to its natural origins and lengthy maturation times, Urushi is a very limited and highly coveted lacquer material. It must be applied layer by layer to allow proper curing and setting time for each layer, which can take up to two months. Once finished, Urushi will be waterproof and resistant to most environmental conditions, making Urushi fountain pens shiny, durable, and able to stand the test of time.
The base of these pens is Ebonite, a special material made of vulcanized rubber (rubber hardened by treatment with sulfur). Ebonite is extremely lightweight, durable, and chemical-resistant, making it a great base to hold the 12 layers of Urushi lacquer on these pens.
Unlike many Urushi pens that only come in classic colors such as black or red, the Pigmented Urushi in Sailor's Color Urushi Kaga line ensures that there is an Urushi Ebonite pen to suit anyone's tastes.
