About Sailor:
Sailor was founded in 1911. The founder Kyugoro Sakata was given a fountain pen by a friend returning from the UK after studying at the Royal Navy. He was inspired and determined to start making fountain pens in Japan. Sailor became the first fountain pen company in Japan, and earned many more firsts in Japan -- first ballpoint pen in 1948, first ink cartridge in 1954 and first brush pen in 1972, etc.
In the 1970's, Sailor made a popular beginner fountain pen, "Candy," that sold more than 15 million within a few years. However, the number of the fountain pen users were declining as ballpoint pens became more mainstream.
In 1981, Sailor decided to go in the opposite direction from their "Candy" pen and began focusing on producing a higher standard series, which is the 1911 series we see today. Their focus on making a higher standard provides a great foundation for their later series of pens. Today, Sailor makes one of the most diverse lines of nibs, some of which are designed for specific writing purposes such as writing musical notes to one that is best for character writing.
Very good purchase for someone like me who wanted to try a fide nib without spending a lot of money. Good quality, fun. I love Yoseka.
Great value pen and so needed for pen and ink drawing given the ability to easily change line weight.
I purchased this as my first fountain pen only 1 week ago and it is currently my favorite pen. I love the brushstroke writing and I use it when writing in my planner or journal. It did come with black ink but it has been changed to purple. Definitely purchase the pen convertor and the cleaning kit also from Sailor. It makes switching ink colors and using bottled ink a joy.
I'd never heard of brush style fountain pens and decided to give this a try, intending to use it for drawing. It's such a strange change of pace from a regular brush pen! You definitely can't use it in the same way; it's got it's own set of rules for mark-making that take quite a bit of getting used to.
It's great to experiment with and change up the way you draw. If you're feeling blocked, this is just the thing to shake up your sketchbook. It's challenging to learn in a fun way, and I look forward to playing with it every time I use it.
On the technical side, the ink has a nice even flow right out of the packaging, with no skipping, gushing or sudden blobs of ink. The ink cartridge it comes with is a gentle black; more of a very dark gray, so if you're searching for a pitch black you ought to look into a different ink cartridge or a converter for custom ink.
Overall, very pleased with this pen!
