The pages are unlined and are made of high quality fountain pen friendly paper. The Yoseka paper was designed for fountain pen use, which means it encourages a quick dry and it perfectly reflects the sheen of the pen ink with minimal bleeding.
In 2018, we made our first notebook with Conifer, a Taiwanese company that has been making notebooks since 1955. In the past few years, they started working on some interesting papers. Their notepad - 習慣寫字 (The Habit of Writing) - sits at the center of our pen testing table. The Habit of Writing notepad uses their first version of paper called KBU, and the notepad is an iconic notepad that represents the writing trend in Taiwan in recent years. Earlier 2018, they came out with KBU2 - a smoother, thicker paper that’s more suitable for writing on both sides, which we ended up picking for our notebook. Yoseka Notebook is an improvement on top of Conifer’s Original series with a more rigorous binding and simpler design. If you take away the durable cardboard cover, the notebook is all about the paper and the naked binding. It’s made for writing, and a celebration of Taiwanese craftsmanship.

The paper is sublime and I love how simple the notebook is. I’ve tried the replacement for it and it’s okay but still not the same. I wish I had known this was being discontinued, I would have ordered 10 more.
Quite simply the best. Because the paper is so thick, you can use both sides of the page even if you get a little heavy-handed. The glossy effect on the paper means inks sit on top beautifully in all their shading, sheening glory. Let me tell you, I even got some shading from inks that aren't typically shading inks, just because of the way it pooled on the page and dried.
It opens flat and the sturdy cover gives it a nice backing for drawing. The color of the paper is a perfect, pale winter white, without the yellow tones you find in cream-colored paper. Colors practically jump off the page.
I predict this will become a definitive notebook for many fountain pen users. Yoseka staff, I hope you order extra boxes!
The paper feels like luxury. My fountain pens glide along the surface and the ink is brought to life. I did have to cut it down a little bit to fit in a leather folio, and I'm so glad I did. I'll be buying this again once I fill up my current journal. STUNNING paper, don't let the cover fool you.
I swear, this paper is magic. It's thick and absorbent, yet still gives a full representation of any ink's shading/sheening qualities. If you're not sure if you want to buy a bottle of ink, try a sample of it on this. It shows the true color and qualities of ink. It's really smooth, but has just the right amount of tooth for fountain pens. Unlike Tomoe River, it's fantastic for people who like to write on both sides of the paper. I just wish they would produce a lined version, with 7 mm lines. I have trouble writing in a straight line. However, this paper has increased my enjoyment of all my inks and fountain pens. It is pure heaven to write on.
Colors don't fade out on this paper like standard notebook paper for Fountain Pens. Putting this up against Rhodia paper, I prefer this. It can handle large amounts of ink while not ghosting to the other side, it even took a Sharpie without ghosting! First heard about this from The Pen Addict podcast, and it really is good! i'd say my one, small improvement I would like is to be able to get it in dot grid.
