This weekly-edition Hobonichi Techo is a compact book that’s easy to carry everywhere. The book is slim and roughly the size of a long wallet, making it easy to fit into a bag or suit pocket. The main layout of the book consists of a weekly calendar on the left page and blank graph paper on the right page. Each weekly spread also contains the characteristic Hobonichi quote in English on the bottom of the page. Although slim at first glance, the book holds 71 graph-ruled memo pages for note-taking at the end of the book. The Weeks is available with a variety of different cover designs on the book itself and does not require an additional cover purchased separately.

White Line, Smooth, Sneaker, and Paper type cover designs are slightly bendable and mold nicely to the shape of a hand. Color, Leather, and Special Artist Collaboration type cover designs are made of stiff paperboard material and have less of a bend, making them easier to clip open and lay flat.

The Weeks book cover now has the botanical illustration of Shihai Sumire, published by botanist Dr. Tomitaro Makino in 1891. The Shihai Sumire, drawn with precise lines throughout, was depicted in the 67th illustration of the 11th collection of the first volume of “Nippon Shokubutsu-shi Zu-hen.”

The purple flower that blooms in the spring in Tosa, Dr. Makino’s birthplace, got its name—Shihai Sumire, “purple-backed violet” in Japanese—from the color of the underside of the leaves. The petals, stems, leaves, roots, stamens, and pistils are carefully observed and depicted, and each flower part is well-balanced.
